A LARGE, IMPOSING, AND INTERESTING DIDACTIC RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION WITH SCENES FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT AND NEW TESTAMENT, 19TH CENTURY. At center a large Crucifixion scene and below the Resurrection, Descent into hades and post Resurrection scenes. To the left and right of the Crucifixion scene at top are randomly selected scenes from both the Old and New Testament including the Creation of Man and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, the Tower of Babble, Joseph’s brother throwing him into a pit, Noah in his ark with dove and rainbow overhead, Jonah being expelled from the mouth of a whale, as well as a scene of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Removal from the Cross and Placement in the Tomb. Below are additional New Testament scenes such as the Nativity, The Baptism of Christ, The Transfiguration, the Last Supper, and the Dormition. Each scene with a corresponding inscription describing the scene, some lengthy. Within an arched reserve on the upper margin the Holy Visage. 42.25 x 35 inches (107 x 89 cm).
