Lot 249
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE FIERY VISAGE MOTHER OF GOD, 18TH CENTURY. The time and place of origin of this icon type are unknown. One might hazard a guess that the fiery visage may relate to the description of Mary as "The unconsumed thornbush, the bush which Moses saw burning, yet not consumed by fire, just as Mary is believed to have carried God within her womb, yet had not been touched." The borders and background cleaned down to gesso. 14 inches x 11.75 inches (35.5 x 30 cm).
Estimate:
$750 - 1,000
€ 525 - 700
