A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DESCENT INTO HADES, 17TH CENTURY. At center Christ within a gilt-decorated green mandrola stands atop the broken gates of Hell, reaches down and grasps the hands of Adam and Eve who come out of their sarcophagi, and behind them Old Testament figures are also released from bondage. In the lower right corner, Christ is seen rising out of his tomb while Roman soldiers sleep. The panel with doubled kovcheg and the background and borders cleaned down to the gesso. 12.5 inches x 11.2 inches (31.5 x 28 cm).
