A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE APPEARANCE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD TO SAINT SERGIY OF RADONEZH, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1840.  At top center the Old Testament Trinity and below the Apostles Peter and John behind the Mother of God who is shown miraculously appearing to the monk Sergiy and behind him his disciple Micah. Overlaid with a fine silver repoussé and chased riza with enameled title plaques at top. Hallmarked Moscow and dated 1843 and with Cyrillic maker's mark “EA” probably for Igor Antipev. 11 inches x 9.25 inches (28 x 23 cm).
