A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE METROPOLITAN ALEXEI, PALEKH, CIRCA 1800.  A finely painted full length image of Alexei delivering a blessing and holding a jeweled book of Gospels. The kovcheg decorated in an ornate gilt pattern of scrolling foliage. In the upper margin with Christ Emmanuel in classical Palekh style clouds. The condensed and abbreviated head height inscription identifies the subject as the image of the "Holy Alexei Metropolitan of Moscow and all of Russia." 14.25 inches x 12 inches (36 x 30.5 cm).
