A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE KING OF KINGS, PROBABLY MSTERA, 19TH CENTURY.  In this extended diesis scene, Christ is shown in the vestments of a Bishop wearing a crown and sitting on a royal throne. To the left is the Queen Mother and to the right is John the Forerunner, also crowned. Immediately behind Christ are the Archangel Michael and the Archangel Gabriel. Additionally, a gathering of six saints are also shown, each identified by the name inscribed in their haloes, they include the Apostles Peter and Paul, the Apostle John the Theologian, St. Nicholas, and Saints Zosim and Savvatiy. At top center God the Father delivers a blessing and immediately below him is a dove superimposed on an eight-pointed star (Glory), which sits between Father and Son, thereby comprising the Trinity. The upper margin inscribed with a condensed and abbreviated less commonly found title for this image reading, "IMAGE OF THE KING OF KINGS, GOD OF GODS, LORD OF LORDS." The title derives from a variation used in Daniel 2:47. 14.1 inches x 12.4 inches (36 x 31.5 cm).
