A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN, CIRCA 1780. Here the Apostle John sits in an interior contemplating his Gospels. An angel representing the Holy Spirit whispers divine guidance into his ear. He holds an open book upon which is inscribed the beginning of his Gospel, "In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God...." Behind him a large black eagle, his symbol as borrowed from the West. The upper margin inscribed in Slavonic, identifying the subject as "An image of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian." 18 inches x 15.5 inches (46 x 39 cm).
