Lot 350
AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE AKATHIST MOTHER OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY.  At center the Mother of God and Christ child both wearing crowns. The shaped frame in which they appear is edged in writing which begins with the words of Kontakion 13 from the Akathist Hymn: "O all-hymned Mother Who bore the Word, holiest of all saints, accept now our offering, and deliver us from all misfortune, and rescue us from the coming torment those who cry to you, Alleluia." The various objects around her are all symbols of Mary from the Akathist hymn, "Rejoice, you are the King's heavenly throne," "Rejoice, You are the Church and Door," “You are the Wall, Virgin Mother of God.” They continue, "You are the Uncut Mountain, Golden Censer, Unfading Flower, Depth Unfathomable, High Ladder, Tablets Inscribed with the Law, and Fiery Pillar." A less frequently encountered Mother of God type. 12.25 x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5 cm).
