AN INTERESTING SIGNED RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION, FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY. At center Christ depicted crucified upon a cross with the city walls of Jerusalem in the background. Above two angels of the Lord descend with cloths. On the left the “Good Thief” and on the right the “Bad Thief." Beneath the Lord on the left is the Mother of God and Mary Magdalene and on the right the Apostle John and the Roman centurion Longinus. In the lower left corner Roman soldiers cast dice for the robes of Christ. In the lower right corner a figure in a white burial shroud is depicted emerging from the ground representing one of the “saints” whose graves opened at the time of the earthquake during the crucifixion, as Jesus died, according to the narrative in Matthew 27:52, “Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his Resurrection, and went into the Holy City, and appeared unto many." The upper margin painted with the Holy Visage and inscribed in Slavonic with gilt letters identifying the subject as “THE CRUCIFIXION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST." The left border painted with the Apostle Peter and the right border St. Paul. The lower right corner signed in Cyrillic "Leonid" and date code for 1931. 14 inches x 12 inches (35.5 x 30.5 cm).
