A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION AND DESCENT, KHOLUI, CIRCA 1890. A finely painted icon depicting at top center the resurrected Christ standing above His tomb, and below Christ standing atop the broken gates of Hades and releasing the righteous of the Old Testament from bondage. The outer borders painted primarily with post-resurrection scenes including, the Doubting of Thomas and St. Peter finding the empty tomb and burial clothes (upper left), the myrrh-bearing women, the good thief entering paradise (upper right), and Christ appearing to the Apostles at the Sea of Tiberius. The upper margin inscribed with the title, "The Resurrection of Christ." The borders inscribed with narratives describing the corresponding scenes. 14.1 inches x 12.25 inches (36 x 31 cm).
