A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE FINDING OF THE HEAD OF JOHN THE FORERUNNER, 19TH CENTURY. At top center Christ delivers a blessing and below the head of John is shown on a footed dish within a hole in the ground. There are three separate incidences in which his head is discovered. Within his halo is inscribed the words, “The Holy Great Prophet John the Forerunner." On the side borders two saints and the upper margin inscribed with the title of this icon, "THE FINDING OF THE HONORABLE HEAD OF THE HOLY PROPHET JOHN THE FORERUNNER." 21.25 inches x 18 inches (54 x 46 cm).
