A LARGE RUSSIAN DOUBLE-SIDED PROCESSIONAL ICON DEPICTING THE SMOLENSK MOTHER OF GOD AND THE THREE HIERARCHS, CIRCA 1700. Executed on a shaped wood panel on a moss green ground the Smolensk or Hodigetria Mother of God gestures towards her son as the source of mankind’s salvation, both are identified by their standard Greek abbreviations. The Three Hierarchs depicted full length in standard attire and poses, and each identified by the inscription above his head. From left to right they are, St. Basil, St. Gregory, and St. John Chrysostom. 26 inches 16.75 inches (65 x 42.5 cm).
