Pierre Jules Mêne was a French sculptor considered to be among the most successful animalière sculptors of his time. Although he produced many bronzes in his lifetime, among his favorite subjects were horses as seen in the offered lot. In 1837, Mêne established the first of many foundries which were later run by his son, Auguste Cain, following his death in 1879.
