A RARE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION AND APOSTLES SUFFERING MARTYRDOM, PROBABLY PALEKH, CIRCA 1800. At center within an oval reserve the crucifixion of Christ surrounded by 12 circular medallions painted with images of the Martyrdom of each Apostle and each identified with a corresponding inscription. Clockwise from upper left they are: St. Thaddeus, St. Philip, St. Mark, St. Thomas, St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Andrew, St. James, St. John the Theologian, St. Matthew, the Apostle John, and St. Bartholomew. Interspersed are four circular red medallions inscribed with excerpts from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God, Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven, Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God, Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled." At mid-left and right are two ornately painted cartouches each inscribed with prayers to Christ, “Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten son, yours is the power and the kingdom and the glory…” The upper margin inscribed with a lengthy condensed and highly stylized title identifying the subject as "IMAGE OF THE HOLY TWELVE APOSTLES ENDURING SUFFERING AND MARTYRDOM FOR CHRIST." A large and rarely encountered subject. 21 inches x 16.6 inches (53.5 x 42.5 cm).
