A MID 19TH CENTURY HUNGARIAN POLYCHROME WOOD TRUNK ON STAND. The trunk with exposed dovetail corners painted with fruit and floral in vase design within carved cartouche form panels on a red ground, the two end panels in dark blue below a bread board hinged top, the underneath painted "SZABO ZSU SANNAE EZA LADA 843" within a "Leaf and Berry" wreath on a dark and light blue sponged ground, and raised on one drawer base with tapered legs. Height 39.75 inches, diameter 23.25 inches, width 40.25 inches (101 x 59.5 x 102.5 cm).

Provenance:

Originally from the collection of Josephine Bay Paul (1900-1962) who was a noted collector, financier, shipping executive, and philanthropist, purchased in Europe by her first husband Charles Ulrick Bay (d.1955), United States Ambassador to Norway from 1946 -1953, for use in decorating their vacation home, Hill Farm, in Pawling, New York, which was sold along with the above mentioned lot to friends Norman Vincent and Ruth Stafford Peale in the 1960s. This piece was donated by the Ruth Stafford Peale Estate to the current consignor, the Vesterheim American Norwegian Museum, after her death in 2008.
