A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF CHRIST AS THE LORD ALMIGHTY, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1915. Here Christ is depicted in a manner echoing icons painted in 16th century, a style propagated by the proponents of early icon painting which became known again through modernized restoration techniques developed at the end of the 19th century. Here Christ delivers a blessing and holds an open book of Gospels to a less frequently encountered text, Matthew 11:27, “All things are delivered to me of my Father.” The gilt shoulder height inscription identifies the subject as "THE LORD ALMIGHTY." Perhaps the most well-known exponent of this style was the court painter Nikolai Sergeevich Emelianov who was a favorite of the Imperial family and was commissioned to produce icons (along with Mikhail Dikarev) for the Feodorvsky Cathedral at Tsarskoe Selo. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5 cm).
