AN EXCEPTIONAL SIGNED AND DATED RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT FEODOSIY, VASILIY KHOKHLOV, PALEKH, 1903. Exquisitely painted on an ornate incised gilt ground of repeating patterns, the miter and vestments finely painted to simulate bullion embroidery and gemstones. He is identified by the title written at head height, "The Holy Feodosiy, Archbishop of Cherenkov." The borders ornately incised and decorated in fau cloisonné enamel. Signed along the lower margin in Cyrillic, "Icon painter V. Khokhlov, Vladimir Provence, Palekh, 1903, 26th day of June." Verso of icon with vintage hand-written Cyrillic inscription, "Sanctified and laid upon the holy relics of St. Feodosiy." 14 inches x 12.25 inches (35.5 x 31 cm).

Vasiliy Aleksandrovich Khokhlov (1853-1924) was a noted Palekh icon painter from the famous Khokhlov family dynasty of icon painters. He worked in Moscow until the 1890's, after which time he moved to Palekh and was elected starosta (village administrator). He continued to paint up until the Revolution in partnership with his sons Mikhail, Pavel, and Alexander.
