A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. BARBARA, CIRCA 1890. Realistically rendered, here Barbara depicted as a royal wearing jewel-encrusted garments and a veiled crown. She holds a chalice and a scroll inscribed in Slavonic, "I TEACH THE HOLY TRINITY, ONE GOD." Executed on an exceedingly ornate, incised gilt ground with enameled halo and the borders also with enameling to simulate cloisonné. She is identified by the shoulder-height inscription as, "The Holy Great Martyr Barbara." 38.5 inches x 23.5 inches (98 x 60 cm).
