A THOMAS JEFFERSON SIGNED APPOINTMENT, 1781, WITH RED SEAL.  Signed as Governor of Virginia appointing Nicholas Cabell, Patrick Rose and Samuel Meredith as Justices of the Peace in the county of Amherst and dated 24th of March 1781 with red seal lower left and signature of Thomas Jefferson lower right, some losses and discoloration, 10.5 inches x 7.5 inches (26.5 x 19 cm). Nicholas Cabell (1750-1803) was Colonel in the 1st Battalion in the Revolutionary War, present at Lord Cornwall's surrender at Yorktown and was later a State Senator. He is also related to William Horsley, the named appointee of the preceding lot. Patrick Rose (1745-1822) was a Colonel in the Revolutionary War and apparently a builder. It is recorded that in 1783 he had six white and 56 black slaves. Samuel Garland Meredith Jr. (1732-1808) was also a Colonel in the Revolutionary War, his brother-in-law was Patrick Henry. He was a member of the Convention of May 1776.
