AN EXCEPTIONAL SILVER GILT AND CORAL MOUNTED CARVED BOXWOOD CRUCIFIX, MT. ATHOS 18TH CENTURY.  The double-sided cross form finely carved with the Crucifixion on one side and with the Four Evangelists at the cross-ends; the verso carved with the Baptism of Christ. Encased in a silver-gilt and gilt metal filigree mount set with pink coral and glass beads and with dove (Holy Spirit) finial. The silver-gilt handle engraved and resting on a similarly decorated repoussé domed base. Height 8.75 inches (22.3 cm).

A center of miniature carving between the 16th and 18th centuries, and a craft that is still practiced by the monks of Athos today, such crosses were the prized possessions of the bishops, priest and monks who owned them.
