A CARVED DOUBLE-SIDED BOXWOOD BLESSING CROSS, MT. ATHOS, 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY. The double-sided cross form carved on the front with the crucifixion at center, the Resurrected Christ at top and at the horizontal cross ends two of the Evangelists. The verso carved with the Baptism of Christ at center, God the Father at top, Saints Helen and Constantine at the base and the horizontal cross ends with the other two Evangelists. Contained in an ornate silvered frame emitting rays, embellished with coral beads, a pierced crown finial at top and a handle which can be removed from the square stepped base. Height 11.5 inches (29.2 cm).
