A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD OF THE LEAPING INFANT, 18TH CENTURY. Finely painted on a gilt ground, two angels of the Lord look on as the infant Christ playfully leaps in his mother's lap. The lower margin inscribed in Old Church Slavonic, "Depiction of the most honorable image of the Mother of God, the Leaping Infant." Overlaid with a finely crafted silver-gilt repoussé riza and halo, apparently unmarked. In English, the title for this iconographic subject is often rendered as, "The Mother of God of the Playing Child." 13.25 inches x 10.8 inches (33.5 x 27.5 cm).
