Lot 20
THE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE TENDERNESS MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1800.  In this unidentified Mother of God type, the title “Tenderness” (Russian - Umilinie) can be used. The Tenderness title is a generic term used to describe icons that depict Mother and child in a “tender” cheek-to-check embrace. While most icons of the Mother of God are inscribed with a specific title, this one is not. The entire image overlaid with a heavy repoussé and chased gilded silver riza and halo. The riza hallmarked Moscow, dated 1818 and with Cyrillic maker's mark I.F., probably for Ivan Fedorov, a silversmith active in Moscow from 1801 to 1821, and verso with various inscriptions. 12 inches x 10.5 inches (30.5 x 26.6 cm).
Estimate:  $3,000 - 5,000   € 2,100 - 3,500
Price Realized: $18,750.00
