Lot 108
A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE LORD ALMIGHTY, OVCHINNIKOV, MOSCOW. Here Christ is presented as the Lord Almighty. He delivers a blessing with his right hand and holds an open book of Gospels which is inscribed ZAPOVYED NOVUIU DAIU VAM, DA LIUBITE DRUG DRUGA- 'A new commandment I give unto you, that ye also love one another' (John 13:34). The head of Christ is encircled with the distinctive cross-halo incorporating the Greek words HO ON, meaning 'Who Is,' as found in the book of Revelation 1:8 and given in Exodus as a title of God. The naturalistically rendered image overlaid with an ornate silver-gilt riza with overall cloisonne enameling of scrolling foliage and each corner set with a flowering bud. The silver gilt frame with integral suspension loop at top and the back covered in crimson silk. Hallmarked Moscow, circa 1885, Cyrillic makers mark П.О-for Pavel Ovchinnikov, and with 84 silver standard. 2.1 inches x 1.9 inches (5.3cm x 4.8cm). In Russian Orthodoxy, on his wedding day the groom would process to the altar carrying with him an icon of Christ. Traditionally such wedding icons of Christ were ordered to be painted with the same Gospel text as found on the offered lot (John 13:34). The icons of Christ, along with the icon carried by the bride (a Mother of God image) were then taken home and placed in the newlywed's 'beautiful corner'. Icons such as the offered lot were often received by newly married men as a personal icon of Christ to be taken with them on their travels.
