A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE PROPHET ELIJAH, circa 1900. Naturalistically rendered, the great prophet looks heavenward while holding an open scroll upon which is inscribed, With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of hosts. (1Kings 19:10). The entire image overlaid with a silver-gilt and repousse riza with applied shaded enamel halo and corners and with champleve enameled title plaque and scroll text. Riza hallmarked Moscow, 1899-1908 and with Cyrillic makers mark S.G., probably Sergiy Gubkin. Verso covered in old worn velvet. 10.6 inches x 8.75 inches (27cm x 22.2cm).
