AN EXCEPTIONAL SIGNED RUSSIAN ICON OF THE GUARDIAN ANGEL, WORKSHOP OF DIKAREV-1904. Depicted full length, the Guardian Angel with arms spread and holding a sword rests atop a cluster of highly stylized clouds, a hallmark of the distinct and popular Mstera icons. The garments finely jeweled and decorated with intricate chrysography. The background inscribed in highly stylized gilt Slavonic lettering 'The Holy Guardian Angel'. Below, the distant background is rendered in miniature depicting rivers, hills, forests and a walled city all executed in the typical Dikarv, Chirikov or Guryanov style. The top central border with a medallion cartouche depicting Christ Emmanuel partially encircled within characteristic Mstera style clouds. The borders ornately incised in faux enameling and the lower right corner signed in Cyrillic 'V. Mishkov' and dated 1904, and the edges and verso of wood panel tinted in red as is often found on such icons. Exquisite! 10.5 inches x 8.75 inches (26.2 cm x 22.4cm).
