A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. NICHOLAS WITH LIFE SCENES, MOSCOW, 19TH CENTURY. At the center Nicholas, dressed in Bishops vestments, delivers a blessing and holds an open book of Gospels to Luke 6:17 (The beatitudes). At shoulder height on the left Christ presents Nicholas the Gospels and on the right the Mother of God presents his bishop’s stole. The central image is surrounded by 16 scenes related to the life and times of St. Nicholas. They are identified by accompanying inscriptions upon the border. Read top to bottom and from left to right they are, The birth of Nicholas, his baptism, the healing of a blind woman, his learning letters, his consecration as deacon, his finding of a spring of water, his consecration as bishop, his appearance to the eparch Evlavius, the driving of a devil out of a tree beside a well, the rescue of three condemned to execution, his appearance to three wrongly-imprisoned men, the saving of the drowning boy, Nicholas saving a poor merchant by buying his rug and giving back, the return of the boy Agricola to his parents, the death of Nicholas, and the transfer of the relics of Nicolas from Myra to Bari in Italy. Overall in very good condition. 12.25 inches x 10.6 inches (31cm x 27cm).
