Lot 135
A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION, PASSION AND FEASTS, MOSCOW CIRCA 1880. Complex icons such as the offered lot became increasingly popular beginning at the end of the 18th century and continuing through the 19th century. Such icons were based in part on larger church icons which exhibited multiple border scenes. However, icons such as the offered lot were of course much smaller than a church icon and subsequently one could have a single icon to venerate that represented, as in this case, all the major church feasts. The center image of the offered icon depicts both the Resurrection and the Descent into Hades thereby combining both the traditional Eastern Orthodox Easter image with that of the West. This image is then surrounded by 12 images of the Passion, The Last Supper, the Washing of the Feet, the Prayer of the Cup, the Arrest, Christ before Caiphas, Christ before Pilate, the Scourging at the Pillar, the Crowning of Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the Removal from the Cross, the Placement in the Tomb. And further out still are images representing the 16 great church feasts beginning at upper left, The Birth of the Mother of God, the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple, Trinity Sunday, the Annunciation, The Nativity of Christ, the Meeting of the Lord, The Baptism of the Lord, The Entry into Jerusalem, the Transfiguration, The Ascension of the Lord, The Dormition of the Mother of God, the Raising of Lazarus, the Beheading of John the Forerunner, The Exaltation of the Cross, the Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah, the Pokrov Mother of God. Over 150 individually painted figures. An exquisite specimen in excellent condition. 14 inches x 12.2 inches (35.5cm x 30.5cm).
