Lot 139
AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE REMOVAL FROM THE CROSS & THE PLACEMENT IN THE TOMB, 19TH CENTURY. This icon combines two subjects. At the top, the Removal from the Cross is illustrated, although typically it does not include images of the Penitent Thief (illustrated on the left-to the right of Christ) and the Bad Thief, still on their crosses. At center Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus along with an assistant remove the crucified body of Christ from the cross as the three Marys, the Apostle John and the Roman Centurion Longinus (far left) look on. Together below and with two angels of the Lord, they all assist placing Christ in the tomb, shown here as a sarcophagus, lowering him in by his burial shroud. At top center is the Lord Sabaoth with the Holy Spirit (a dove) beneath Him. The upper left corner displays the sun which has darkened and upper right, the moon which has become as blood (Joel 2:31, Acts 2:20). The upper margin inscribed 'The Image of the Removal from the Cross and Placement in the Tomb of Our Lord Jesus Christ'. In an excellent state of preservation. 13.8 inches x 12 inches (35.2cm x 30.4cm).
Estimate:  $750 - 1,000   € 563 - 750
