A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE NINE MARTYRS OF KIZYKOS, CIRCA 1800. According to legend, these nine died for their faith in the Fourth Century. They are seen here before the church at Kizykos, (Greece) which displays an icon of the Holy Visage above the entrance. The name of each martyr is inscribed within each halo: Magnos (bones broken), Theognis (whipped and nails pulled out), Rufus (blows and fire), Antipatros (tortured with thorns), Theostikhos (fingers cut off, etc.), Theodotos (scalded), Thaumasios (knife and lance), Artemas (pushed off a mountain while in a chariot); and Philemon (buried alive). In Slavonic their names are Magn, Feognid, Ruf, Antipatr, Feostikh, Feodot, Favmasiy, Artema, and Filimon. Their martyr’s crowns are depicted in the upper margin floating above upon the gilded sky. The icon is finely painted and exhibits extensive gilt-highlights and fine detailing throughout, typical of higher quality icons of the period. The borders with family saints, on the left Alexi Metropolitan of Moscow and on the right the Venerable Evdokia. The Nine Martyrs of Kizykos are commemorated on the 29th of April. A fine icon of a less frequently encountered subject and in an excellent state of preservation. 12.25 inches x 9.75 inches (31cm x 25cm).
