A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE FEODOROVSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD. The Feodorovskaya or Theodorovskaya icon is another Umilenie or Tenderness type. In the early 17th century the original was carried by the deputation which implored young Mikhail Romanov to become Tsar of Russia, and it was used to bless him upon his ascension to the throne. It thus became the patron of the house of Romanov. The entire image overlaid with an ornate silver-gilt repousse and chased riza with applied halo. Hallmarked Novgorod, and dated 1793. The painted icon later (20th century). 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31cm x 26.5cm).
