A RUSSIAN CARVED IVORY PLAQUE DEPICTING CATHERINE THE GREAT, KHOLMOGORY, 18TH CENTURY. The profile facing right carved in relief with cascading hair set with crown, scalework breastplate and sash within a circular laurel wreath set in a frame with swags in the upper corners and resting on a plinth engraved with abbreviated inscription By the Grace of God Her Imperial Highness Katherine II Empress of All Russia, and set within a larger framework of pierced carved foliate scrolls, the outer margins tinted, and the entire image laid against a faded light blue silk ground. Contained in a glazed gilt-bronze frame with crown finial and suspension loop. 6 inches x 5.2 inches (15.2 x 13.2cm).
