A VERY FINE WALRUS IVORY AND BONE VENEERED JEWELRY BOX, KHOLOMOGORY OR ARCHANGEL, MID 18TH CENTURY. In the form of a drop-down secretary surmounted by a top section fitted with a small drawer. The drop front opening to reveal an additional two drawers and below a large single drawer. The front and sides of wood carcass overlaid with carved and incised panels of ivory, some stained in green and red tones with floral and geometric patterns. The openwork panels decorated with mythical animals such as unicorns, griffins and birds, and the central section with a hunting scene flanked by rabbits backed with foil and resting on bracket feet. A large and impressive example of this uniquely Russian art form. Height 15.6 inches. Width 11.25 inches. Depth 4.4 inches (39.5 cm, 28.5cm, 11.5cm).
