A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DORMITION, 17TH CENTURY. In this standard depiction, the Mother of God lies upon a funeral bier surrounded by the apostles and angels. Her son Christ stands behind her and in His arms He receives her soul represented here as an infant in swaddling clothes. Additional saints have also been added. Below a fanatical priest tries to knock the Virgin off the bier and is attacked by a sword wielding angel. 17.25 inches x 15 inches (44cm x 37cm). Scattered losses and restorations.
