A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. NICHOLAS, 18TH CENTURY. The circular wood panel finely painted with a traditional waist-up image of Nicholas. He delivers a blessing and holds an open book of Gospels. His vestments embellished with jewels and ornately embroidered. The shoulder height inscription identifies him as The Holy Nicholas Wonderworker. And the lower border displaying a lengthy Slavonic inscription 'A true and faithful likeness of the very same measure of the Wonderworking Icon from the Yaroslav's Court palace area in the city of great Novgorod.' The entire image overlaid with a substantial silver repousse and chased riza with applied halo hallmarked Pskov, dated 1791 and with indistinguishable Cyrillic maker's mark. Diameter 23.5 inches (60 cm).
