Lot 357
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ANNUNCIATION, 19TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY NEVYANSK SCHOOL. This subject depicts the narrative as written in the Gospel of Luke but also borrows from the Protoevangelion of James. On the left, two images of the Archangel Gabriel are seen. The first image of Gabriel (far left) represents an aspect drawn from the Protoevangelion which relates that while out drawing water Mary heard a voice but saw no one. The Archangels position, being turned away from the Virgin, conveys then that the two have not yet met face to face. This is sometimes referred to as the 'Pre-Annunciation'. The second image (center) has the Archangel Gabriel face to face with Mary announcing the coming birth of Christ to her. She is shown seated and studying scripture and holds a thread between her hands – representing a story in which she is said to have won by lot the right to spin the royal color purple for the veil of the Temple. At top center is God the Father with a dove between himself and the Virgin, representing Luke 1:35, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. The upper margin inscribed in Slavonic, An Image of the Annunciation of the Good News (BLAGOVYESCHCHENIE) To The Most Holy Mother of God. The left border displays an image of Saint John the Forerunner (Baptist) and the right border Saint Peter of Alexandria. The extensive use of gold leaf and predominance of red hues are both typical of icons produced in the Ural region town of Nevyansk which was settled in large part because of the productive gold and mineral deposits found there. 14 inches x 12.25 inches (36cm x 30.5cm).
