A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1800-1825. Here Christ is seen standing in the Jordan River. On the left John the Forerunner baptizes Christ who is attended by three angels of the Lord depicted on the right bank of the river, their hands covered with cloths as a sign of veneration. The Holy Spirit descends from Heaven as a dove within an eight-pointed aureole of light (glory) as God the Father looks on from above. The upper margin inscribed with the title, The Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 inches x 17.5 inches (53.5cm x 45cm).
