AN INTRICATE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE POKROV MOTHER OF GOD, 18TH CENTURY. This icon combines two subjects whose celebration falls on October 1st-the vision of the Holy Fool (Blazhennuiy) AndrE, who saw the Mother of God in the air within the church of the Blachernae at Constantinople, and Romanos the Melodist (sladkopyevets), who could not sing well until the Mother of God came to him in a dream and gave him a scroll to eat, thereby granting him the gift of song. In the offered lot, the Mother of God is depicted at the center of the icon on a cloud within the church holding in her outstretched arms her protective mantle (pokrov) over the congregation below. She is encircled by the seven archangels and further accompanied by a gathering of 28 various saints and immediately above her Christ delivers a blessing. Below at center stands Romanos the Melodist. He points upward and holds a scroll reading 'Today the Virgin stands in the church.' To the right of Romanos the Holy Fool AndrE raises his arm toward the Mother of God, showing her to his disciple Epifany. To the right further still, the Mother of God appearing to Romanos in his sleep, feeding him a scroll and granting him the gift of song. To the left of Romanos the Patriarch of Constantinople and behind him the Emperor Leo and Empress Theophano. The left and right borders painted with various family saints including, Kharlampiy, St. Sadoth, St. Anufrious, St. Barbara, St. Tarasius, St. Stephan, St. Paraskeva and St. Agelina. Inscribed in the lower corners This icon was a gift of the merchant family Sokov to the Trinity Cathedral. 18 inches x 15 inches (45.5 x 38cm).
