Lot 363
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE PLAKUSHIA 'WEEPING' MOTHER OF GOD, 1ST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY. In this icon type the Mother of God looks down upon the proportionally smaller crucified body of her son who lies atop the stone of anointing or perhaps within a sarcophagus. An interesting addition in the offered lot is the inclusion of an Angel of the Lord who looks on at lower left. While the overall iconographic style in this example relates well to the traditional old method, the subject and composition relate more to the Western or Catholic image known under the title of The Pieta. Nevertheless a less frequently encountered subject interestingly composed and in a good and original state of preservation. 14 inches x 12.25 inches (35.5 x 31cm).
