A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ALL-SEEING EYE OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. At center Christ Emmanuel, the pre-existent Logos, is depicted in the center of a circle from which four star-like rays extend outward with the symbols of the Four Evangelists at their terminating points. The central 'sun' on which Immanuel is placed has a face with two eyes, nose and mouth. Around it is a ring containing seraphim. The Mother of God is depicted between Christ Immanuel and God the Father is shown at top delivering a blessing. The upper border inscribed with the title VSEVIDYASHCHEE OKO BOZHIE (The All-Seeing Eye of God). This icon type signifies not only the incarnation of Christ but also the perpetual watchfulness and mind of God. Christ is the Sun of Righteousness who sees all, to the four corners of the world. Like the sun which sees everything and enlightens the entire world with its light, Christ knows everything and enlightens the earth with the light of His teaching. 7 inches x 6 inches (18cm x 15cm).
