AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN FOUR PART ICON, 18TH CENTURY. At center a small medallion painted with the image of Christ Emmanuel and the panel divided into four equal reserves each depicting a separate iconographical image. Clockwise from upper left they are: The Mother of God Joy to All Who Sorrow, The Unburnt Thornbush Mother of God, The Fiery Accession of the Prophet Elijah, and Saint George slaying the dragon. Such icons were usually commissioned to reflect saints of miraculous icons whose feast day corresponded with a event in the life of a family member such as a birthday, wedding, consecration and the like. 17.5 inches x 14.75 inches (44 x 38cm).
