A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE SEVEN YOUTHS OF EPHESUS, CIRCA 1875. These 'Seven Sleepers' were early Chrstian who sought refuge in a cave from the persecutions of the Emperor Decius in the 3rd century. They were walled up alive, and went into a miraculous sleep. Two hundred years passed. Then the sleepers awoke, and were found by the citizens of Ephesus, which in the passage of two centruies had become Christian. The Seven Youths died not long after. Their names are Iamvlikh, Ioann, Dionisiy, Eksakustodian (Konstantin), Antonin, Martinian and Maximilian. The 'Seven Youths of Ephesus' are usually depicted lying together within a cave in a hill, all sound asleep. 13.75 inches x 12.25 inches (35 x 31 cm).
