Lot 43
A RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINTS STEPHEN AND JULIANA, LAST QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY. In this highly accomplished and painterly icon are depicted the Protomartyr St. Stephen (left) who is dressed as a deacon and holds a censer. On the right is the Martyr Saint Juliana who holds a palm and a crucifix, and at top center the New Testament Trinity image. The distant background displays a complex scene depicting the martyrdom of St. Stephen finely rendered in shades of red and blue and highlighted in gold, reminiscent perhaps of a Dutch or Baroque landscape. The lower central section displays the remnants of a prayer to St. Stephen. He is identified by the inscription above his head as, 'The Holy Apostle and Protomartyr Archdeacon Stephan.' The dark borders and extensive use of blue and red hues together with the wide use of gold highlighting and naturally shaded fleshy features are all aspects of what Tarasov calls the 'Lively transference into Orthodox iconic space of Western Catholic and Protestant imagery.' 12.5 inches x 10.6 inches (32cm x 27cm). *See: Oleg Tarasov, Icon and Devotion, Reaktion Books Ltd, London, 2002, chapter four for a treatment on this topic.
