SCHLATTER, DANIEL (1791-1870) Bruchstucke aus einigen Reisen nach dem sudlichen Russland, in den Jahren 1822 bis 1828. Mit besonderer Rucksickt auf die Nogaijen-Tartaren am Asowschen Meere. First Edition St. Gallen & Bern, Huber & Comp 1830. 8 volumes. Original boards covered with marbled paper, with a gilt label on spine. Contains 11 hand colored lithograph plates including hand colored lithographed title, one folding and 9 other full-page hand colored lithographed plates. A rare first edition of the unique travel account by the Swiss missionary Daniel Schlatter (1791-1870) from St. Gall. Schlatter made three voyages to southern Russia and to the north coast of the Sea of Azov. The lithographs show Tartar costumes, habitations and both Tartar and Turkish writing. The book is dedicated to Tartar Ali-Ametow and his son Abdullah. The preface is dated St. Gallen, August 1829. The three voyages are described: -First voyage: from Switzerland via London, Berlin, St. Petersburg, and Moscow to southern Russia; back via Odessa, Lemberg, Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck (p. 1-44). -Second voyage: from Switzerland, via Bavaria, Saxony, Cracow and Odessa to the Sea of Azov; back via Odessa, Constantinople, Smyrna, Mediterranean, Livorno, Florence, Milano, Como and Splugenpass. With trips to Odessa and the Crimea in 1825-6 (p. 45-418). -Third voyage: from Switzerland, via London, Brussels, Cassel, Berlin, Dantzig, Warsaw and Odessa to the Sea of Azov; back via Odessa, Lemberg, Brunn, Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck (419-75).-Appendix: Privileges of the Mennonites in Russia (p. 476-81). -Survey of the German, Bulgarian and Jewish colonies in the area (p. 482-90). -Annotations to the map (p. 491-6)-map absent, and list of plates. Overall good condition, some very light toning, and some wear to leather spine. Bold colored hand colored lithograph plates. Interior of back cover exhibits vintage АНТИКВАРИАТ label. 8.25 x 5.25 inches (20.8 x 13.1cm)
