A RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. TIKHON WONDER-WORKER OF KALUGA, 19TH CENTURY. Tikhon (died 1492) left his native Moscow in search of an ascetic life in the hinterlands where he found a great hollowed-out oak in which to live. Apparently the tree was on royal property and St. Tikhon had not thought to secure a residency permit. When the prince holding title to the oak tree and its environs threatened to run the saint off however, the prince found himself suddenly incapacitated and St. Tikhon was allowed to stay. He is depicted in the offered icon within the hollowed out tree praying before an icon of the Savior which hangs inside the tree illuminated by a lampada. In the background is the monastery he founded. The lithographed icon laid on wood and overlaid with a gilded sliver, repoussed and chased riza. Hallmarked St. Petersburg, dated 1888, Cyrillic makers mark S.S. Ya., and with 84 standard. 7 inches x 5.75 inches (18cm x 14.5cm).
