Lot 147
A VERY FINE CARVED IVORY PLAQUE DEPICTING THE MARRIAGE OF KING LOUIS XIV TO MARIA THERESA, FRENCH, PROBABLY 19TH CENTURY. Finely carved in high relief with fine detailing, good anatomy and proportions depicting the historical event which took place on June 9, 1660, and set in a velvet lined stand-up frame. The inspiration for the offered lot would seem to relate to a Gobelins tapestry probably designed by Henri Testelin (1616-1695) while working for Charles LeBrun (1619-1690). The scene is also related to a painting of the same subject by Laumosnier (Fl. 1680-1725) and which now hangs in the Musee de Tesse, Le Mans, France. 6.75 inches x 5 inches (17 x 12.5cm)
Estimate:  $3,000 - 5,000
Price Realized: $5,280.00
