A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1825. Fully and finely painted in the Italianate style, the Mother of God holds the infant Christ and gestures towards him with her right hand showing the viewer the way to salvation. Christ holds a scroll in his left hand (a sign of his wisdom) and with His right hand delivers a blessing. The entire image overlaid with an exceptional heavy gilded silver repousse and chased riza. The borders repoussed in floral swags and the corners set with silver winged cherub heads. The heads of the Virgin and Christ encircled with brilliant silver haloes embellished with paste stones. Riza hallmarked Moscow, dated 1833, Cyrillic makers mark С.Ж and 84 silver standard. 13 inches x 11 inches (33 x 28 cm)

A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE VLADIMIR MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1840. Finely painted in the Italianate or Western style, Mother and Child depicted in a tender cheek-to-cheek embrace illustrating probably the most recognized miraculous icon of Russia. The entire image overlaid with a substantial and spectacular multi-piece gilded silver riza, repoussed in the Rococo taste with scrolling foliage and shell motifs. The upper left and right corner displaying the Greek abbreviation ΜΡ ΦΥ for Mother of God. The heads of the Virgin and Christ child encircled with brilliant sunburst-form haloes. A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE SMOLENSK MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1843. Traditionally painted, the Virgin gestures towards Her infant son, the source of salvation. Overlaid with a heavy gilded silver repousse riza ornately decorated and with attached haloes. Above the shoulder of the Virgin, an enameled title plaque inscribed in Slavonic reading SMOLENSKAYA and on the right near the head of Christ the abbreviated Greek form of His name IC XC –Isus Khristos Jesus Christ. The riza hallmarked Moscow, dated 1843, with Cyrillic makers mark EA, (probably for Igor Antipov) and with 84 silver standard. AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION, CIRCA 1825. The painted panel inset with an exceptional heavy gilded bronze crucifix in an excellent state of preservation. At top left cherubim and at top right seraphim adore the cross. Directly beneath the central cross beam a gathering of selected saints including: The Holy Great Martyr Dmitri, the Holy Sergius of Radonezh, the Guardian Angel, the Holy Great Martyr Ekaterina (Catherine), the Holy Saint Kosmas and Damian. At the base of the cross the standard figures of Mary Magdalene and the Virgin Mary (left) and at right the Apostle John and the Roman Centurion Longinus. Finely painted in miniature, the central panel depicting both the Resurrection (top) and the Descent into Hades (bottom) thereby reflecting both the Western and Eastern iconographical images of Easter. The borders with eight less frequently depicted images of the Passion each with corresponding inscriptions identifying the subject. From top to bottom left to right they are: The Crowning of Thorns, Christ Before Pilate, Christ Carrying the Cross, Christ Nailed to the Cross, Joseph of Arimathea Requesting the Body of Christ from Pilate, The Removal from the Cross, The Placement in the Tomb, and The Myrrh-bearing Women. A distinctive and finely painted icon of the feast which combines two events- the vision of the Holy Fool Andre and the vision of Romanos the Melodist, both which took place in the Church of the Blachernae in Constantinople. The Virgin is depicted at top center amidst a gathering of Saints, Christ delivers a blessing from upper left and below the interior of the church. The borders with family saints Aventiy (left) and Irina (right). The inscription along the top border identifies the subject as the Pokrov Most Holy Mother of God. A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON AND FRAME DISPLAYING THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. At center, an icon of the Dormition overlaid with a machine engraved silver riza, hallmarked Moscow 1899-1908, Cyrillic makers mark EK for Emelyain Kuznetsov and 84 silver standard. The massive gilt-bronze 16 point star shaped frame overall embellished with paste cabochons and winged cherub heads. The central exposition window flanked by two adoring angels with painted features and above, God the Father, also with painted features spreads His hands and a dove upon His chest-symbol of the Holy Spirit-points downward towards the icon below. Such substantial frames were prominently displayed inside large churches or cathedrals. The style of God the Father in the offered lot relates stylistically to the same image in the main dome of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior Moscow. Diameter 28 inches (71cm)

AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DIESIS WITH ASSEMBLED SAINTS AND CHURCH FESTIVALS, YAROSLAVL, 18TH CENTURY. A large, complex and finely rendered icon of the type generally ordered for a special occasion or person. The central or main upper portion depicts an ornate Diesis image with Christ enthroned and flanked by the Mother of God (left) and John the Forerunner (right) atop highly stylized clouds. Further out still are the archangels Michael (left) and Gabriel (right). Below are a gathering of 28 selected saints each finely rendered with ornate gilt embroidered vestments, no doubt a group of saints favored in the district in which the icon was produced or destined. The top margin and sides painted with seven additional images including five church feasts. From upper left clockwise they are: The Birth of the Mother of God, The Nativity of Christ, The Crucifixion, The Resurrection and the The Raising of Lazarus, all major Church feasts. There is an addition of two Marian images, The Unburnt Thorn bush Mother of God, and Praise of the Mother of God. The distinctive pallet and ornate style with gilt highlights reflect the Kremlin Armory School style made popular in large part by the noted iconographer Simon Ushakov (1626-1686) and found in icons produced in Yaroslavl as well. 13.9 inches x 12 inches (35.5 x 30.5 cm)
