A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE SMOLENSK MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1843. Traditionally painted, the Virgin gestures towards Her infant son, the source of salvation. Overlaid with a heavy gilded silver repousse riza ornately decorated and with attached haloes. Above the shoulder of the Virgin, an enameled title plaque inscribed in Slavonic reading SMOLENSKAYA and on the right near the head of Christ the abbreviated Greek form of His name  IC XC –Isus Khristos Jesus Christ. The riza hallmarked Moscow, dated 1843, with Cyrillic makers mark EA, (probably for Igor Antipov) and with 84 silver standard.   The painted icon perhaps earlier. 12.75 inches x 10.75 inches (32.5 x 27.5 cm)
