AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION, CIRCA 1825. The painted panel inset with an exceptional heavy gilded bronze crucifix in an excellent state of preservation. At top left cherubim and at top right seraphim adore the cross. Directly beneath the central cross beam a gathering of selected saints including: The Holy Great Martyr Dmitri, the Holy Sergius of Radonezh, the Guardian Angel, the Holy Great Martyr Ekaterina (Catherine), the Holy Saint Kosmas and Damian. At the base of the cross the standard figures of Mary Magdalene and the Virgin Mary (left) and at right the Apostle John and the Roman Centurion Longinus. The entire image overlaid with a heavy silver repousse riza hallmarked St. Petersburg circa 1825 and with Cyrillic makers mark ПР and 84 standard. 15.5 inches x 9 inches (39.5 x 23 cm)
