A FINE RUSSIAN PASSION ICON, PALEKH, 19TH CENTURY. Finely painted in miniature, the central panel depicting both the Resurrection (top) and the Descent into Hades (bottom) thereby reflecting both the Western and Eastern iconographical images of Easter. The borders with eight less frequently depicted images of the Passion each with corresponding inscriptions identifying the subject. From top to bottom left to right they are: The Crowning of Thorns, Christ Before Pilate, Christ Carrying the Cross, Christ Nailed to the Cross, Joseph of Arimathea Requesting the Body of Christ from Pilate, The Removal from the Cross, The Placement in the Tomb, and The Myrrh-bearing Women. Without a doubt an important Moscow or Palekh workshop. 12.25 inches x 10.25 inches (31 x 26 cm)
